Easter is Coming!!

Posted by Ksenia

Hello!

The end of term is coming very soon and actually I am a very naughty girl – I am going back to Russia even earlier – on 15th of March.  The Vice Principal of Bellerbys Brighton, Mr Corcut, was very nice to give me permission to go and in return I am coming back early to prepare for the BIG event – mock exams.  We have nearly finished the syllables in certain subjects, so I will have lots of revision to do… But I definitely won’t think about it during the holidays!

On Wednesday the attention of all AS students was focused on the presentation given by LSE, UCL, Kings, and last (but not least!!!) Imperial College of London.  One more time we realised how great it is to study in London at such prestigious places.

Anyway, most of the AS students here are dreaming to study in one of these fabulous universities.  The talk made me go and visit the Imperial College website again and have a look at their courses.  Most of them sound fantastic and and I still can’t make my mind between Biochemistry, Biochemistry with Management, and Biochemistry with a year in industry (as you can see the only thing I am quite certain about is my favourite biochemistry, it’s a good start anyway!).

Last Saturday there was an interesting talk at Bellerbys as part of Brighton Science Festival.  It was about fusion – the process by which a huge amount of energy can be produced.  The realisation of this project is still quite far away in the future, but potentially it can give the mankind an unlimited source of energy (sounds exciting, doesn't it?) so we were really inspired by the idea.

There was a funny thing about the Festival. I, some other students and my chemistry teacher planned to go to another talk about plastic.  At the last moment, when we were about to pay for tickets, the talk was cancelled.  Obviously we were a bit disappointed, but the weather was really nice so we went for a walk to the seafront and had a lively chat!

8th of March is Women’s Day in Russia and in most Slavonic countries (when all boys and men give us flowers and pretend to be nice. Sometimes it seems that they realise how great we are and how much they love us only once a year).  It is the second time when I am celebrating it away from home, here in Brighton.  It is quite a strange feeling, because in my family we have a tradition – every 8th of March we all get together at my grandmother’s apartment, talk, play lotto or dominoes and eat some traditional Russian dishes.  But anyway, I spent most of the morning talking to my parents in Skype and in the evening we went out with other girls to the French restaurant, and we really had a great time.

After dinner we went to the seafront – quite a strange thing to do actually as it was very windy and wet.  But the sea was great; we all just felt something wild and mad in it – an uncontrolled power of nature…  And we all went a bit crazy as well, dancing and shouting, but fortunately people all around us seemed to understand us somehow…

Like many people who come to England, my attitude towards British cuisine is quite negative (I think most of Bellerbys students will definitely agree with me).  However this Sunday I changed my opinion slightly (note, slightly, it still does not mean I like English food – it is impossible).  Even though I’ve been to the UK for quite a long time now I never have been to a pub for a famous Sunday roast. This time we decided to change that.  It was quite a nice and cosy place, we had a great chat and the food was apparently good – real homemade lunch!

Anyway, i think it is my last post before the holidays, so I wish you all to have lots of fun, relax and take the most of these holidays. I definitely will…(to be continued)!

Happy Easter!!!
