Hey You! Try Your Best Ok?

Posted by Linh

It‘s already June - the month of exams (Help me God!!!).  But I still decided to go to Germany the second time.

The main reason of this three-day trip was my mother (oh….well…and some Vietnamese food she brought with her).  My mother went to visit my brother for two weeks.  It has been six months I have not seen her (Time goes fast, doesn’t it?).  My first impression was that she was thinner.  And the second impression was that she coughed a lot.  Poor her!  I sincerely felt scared of time, she looked older.

All the time I have spent in England, I always thought for myself, just focus on the study, sometimes scared that I was not as fashionable as other girls, sometimes calling back home to ask for money.  How horrible I was!  Yes, it was true I tried to ask about my parents through my relatives as well!  And now I knew how protective my parents were of me!  They have asked other people did not talk much about them to me and asked more about my situation.  And how stupid I was, believing in what they said, and thinking that everything was fine.

Now sitting here at the airport, waiting for the flight back to England, I still remember the wrinkles on my mother’s face when she was waving me goodbye!

The exam is coming!  Through this blog, I just want to say to all of you guys that: HEY YOU!  TRY YOUR BEST OK?  ‘CAUSE THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE SPENDING THEIR WHOLE LIFE FOR YOUR FUTURE, WAITING FOR YOU TO COME BACK!

Lol!!!  Sorry if you feel this post annoying!  Anyway, wish you guys best luck in the incoming exams!

Punting…Happy birthday…and Study…

Posted by Linh

Hello everybody!  How are you?

Since my last trip to Paris everybody was hoping to hear something amazing, unexpected about our second bank holiday. On Tuesday, the day after bank holiday that we had to come back to school, my English teacher asked me: “How was your weekend?  Another trip?  Italy?  Or Rome?”.  I had to apologize if you were disappointed but I just spent it right here in Oxford.  Believe me, it wasn't as bad as it sounds.  Actually, it was awesome!  Sometimes you don’t have to go far away to find happiness.

I spent the first day with a group of Vietnamese students studying in England, some of them live in London. We gathered at a Vietnamese girl's house and cooked a traditional food with rice noodle.  It was delicious.  Then we went punting.  Haha, it was funnier than I had imaged at first.  We hired three punts because our number was 15 people.  I asked to try to row the punt.  It was harder and exhausting than I thought.  It just took 10 minutes to knock me out.  Fortunately, other boys who wanted to show off by rowing the punt felt out of the punt.  We had a good laugh together.

The next day, on 24th May, I spent all the day with my classmate to prepare a birthday party for Saray - the girl from Venezuela that went to Paris with me last time.  She was going to be 19.  We gathered at an Iranian friend’s house.  The party started at about 7 pm and lasted until 12 am.  I wished that my birthday party would be like this too.  But it seemed impossible, as I would be back in Vietnam at that time. (Hix!)

Well, there was nothing much to talk about the third day as we were too exhausted to stay awake half of the day, lol!

Anyway, it was a really good time!  As we are getting older every year, every month, every day, every hour and even every second, it’s good to stop yourself sometimes, thinking of what was happening in your life, knowing that, sometimes, you did this badly, sometimes, you acted like a hero, but whatever has happened, you know that your friends are around there, ready to share any moment of your life.  And I know that moment spending time with your friends was always awesome!!!! ^^

A College Worth The Time Spent

Posted by Theresa

Bellerbys College is indeed the best college ever!  In fact, if one is looking for college league table, for those who depend on it; Bellebys would be and is number one.  This college has many treasures in it apart from outstanding academic performance.  It is unique, accommodating, friendly and the teachers are ridiculously wonderful.  I have enjoyed everyday in this college and I would forever cherish every moment I spent in this prestigious college.

My dear readers, I leave you with some guiding principles that have taking me throughout life and they would still lead me to my desires in life.

Firstly, always believe you can do it, not just because others are doing it but because you are determined to reach your goal.

Secondly, always follow your heart and be positive.  Aim to make a positive impact where ever you go.

Thirdly, if you fall, always get up and try again.  Moving the right way is not easy, it takes patience, sacrifice, zeal and determination.  Before all these you must set your mind on an aim.  Never, never give up.

Always remember, you can climb the highest mountain and swim the deepest ocean.  All you need is self up-liftment.

I would always remain yours, Theresa Belonwu.

Are You Ready for Summer?

Posted by Maggie

First things first. I just wanted to say that I had a fabulous time at the Graduation Ball a couple weeks ago. The weather was on our side, thank God. It was a beautiful and warm evening. Excitement was definitely palpable on the school ground pre-soiree. Everybody, and I mean everybody, looked absolutely stunning that night! The students huddled in groups, checking out others' outfits and giggling like mad.

When the 188 bus came, everyone boarded and we were on our way to the Greenwich Pier (which I recently discovered was in fact called Cutty Sark Gardens). There were a few latecomers but all was well and at 8.15 (or so), we left the dock for what proved to be a wonderful night, filled with equally wonderful memories. A glass of bubbly is, without a doubt, mandatory once we were on the boat. As we clinked our glasses and proposed silly toasts, I realized I've been in London for nine months. Time is a very strange concept. Lately, I feel as though time and I were playing this game called "Catch-me-if-you-can". Only time is winning.  That's why I've decided to live my life to the fullest, as if it's the last day.  No regrets. Just living in the moment. And make it worth it.

CIMG0577 CIMG0585

Alright! Enough of my neurosis now, back to the party. The party was incredible. There were a few amazing performances, commenced by Yusuke and Eleanor's rendition of a song... whose title I couldn't quite remember. All I could remember was the intensity of Yusuke's solo - it was off-the-hook. You could almost feel this electrifying vibe radiating from him and his violin. Eleanor provided a steady beat and melody on the keyboard that complemented Yusuke's part. Everybody loved it. The applause went on for what seemed like milleniums! Afterwards, we witnessed the moves of the year, only better when our beloved Bellerbys students showed them off! The Russian ladies strutted their thangs and flipped their hair back while the boys did their own thing. It was like a hip-hop comeback and the dance was so hot that some people requested for an encore! Unbelievable, I know.

Some prizes were given out - like the Best Dressed for the Lady and the Gent which went to Ting Ting, who wore a subtle and elegant kimono get-up and Ian, who pulled off this luxe tuxe look, accessorized with a quirky tie with Elvis' face splattered across it. They were awarded a bottle of Cava each - which I took advantage of. Then there was the King and Queen. Melina - a very very pretty and smart girl from A5 took the crown and a Nigerian boy whose name I couldn't remember became King (and I assure you, he sure is handsome).

The night was in full swing. The bar was packed with people, the casino was packed with people, the dance floor was packed with people. Everywhere you go - there was somebody. And don't forget, the flashing lights!!! I believe the photos taken that night exceed the Oscars red carpet pictures. Loads of us went outside when we were crossing Tower Bridge - only underneath it. We were screaming and laughing our heads off, waving at confused-looking tourists.

CIMG0589 CIMG0595

The boat stopped over at Westminster and some people left and continued partying in Central London. I stayed on (though I did go partying after we got back to Greenwich) and tore the dance floor apart with my girls and boys! Then, I went down to the casino and won quite a bit of chips at the Blackjack table! Too bad they're not real money. Anyhow, it was good fun. Just like the night. It was packed with glam and that's how we like it.

We also had a prize-giving ceremony recently, which was held at the Greenwich University. The staff body was hilarious, as usual, and gave different awards to the deserving students from different groups like the ELPP, Foundation and lastly, A Level. I got a little present as well, for being one of the student ambassadors. I had a tiny dilemma with my belt that day. It kept coming off! When I walked to the stage, all I could think of was, "Snap snap snap, what if my belt just bursts apart?!" I would be the laughing stock of the school. Thank God it didn't fall off.Phew.

After a whole week of grueling exams, suddenly, reality dawned on me. I sit on my desk now, blogging at 2am to tell you how stoked and psyched I am for the summer of 2009! There are several loose ends left for me to sort out, then I'm off! I just can't believe it's already been a year since I first arrived in London. Well, not a year yet but close enough.

I'm no longer the girl who gets lost while trying to find her way to IKEA in Wembley. I'm the girl who takes my friends and Mother around in London, as if I've lived here for my whole life. London has integrated into every single crumb of my soul. I'm definitely going to miss London this summer. Most of all, I'm going to miss all the awesome people I've met in Bellerbys and my closest friends from the college. You know who you are. My dearest flat-mates, I know that next year, we won't live together but remember, flat 5 is probably the most amazing flat that has ever existed on this planet. You girls were amazing. You put up with my constant loud music and late-night disturbances, begging for food. And anyone who feeds me good stuff, well, it goes without saying that I'll love you for the rest of my life. Also, I promise, when I return in September, I'll have heaps of tales to share for everybody!

Until then, I wish you all a splendid and marvelous summer and see you when we all get back!

With love,

Maggie.

What A Term!

Posted by Theresa

Hmm!  You cannot imagine how hectic this third term is.  You can just imagine how university will be; extra hard work.  This is why I cherish Bellerbys College because it prepares one for university education; both the stress part and the relaxing times.  I know what you are thinking?  The stress is much but if one does what they have to do in time, then comes the relaxing part which is revising the notes.

This term was all about researching, course work and presentations, all in a very short time.  This has really been very university like.  On your own with little help from the great teachers of Bellerbys.  My Foundation English Skills lessons have really helped me to progress as well, especially in researching and writing essays in all my subjects.  The best part of my English course is the presentations, where we research formal academic English topics.  It is not really easy, it is all about hard work, zealousness and determination.  Thus, one can learn many things from one another's presentations even on things never heard before.

In fact I am very proud to say that I have really gained my academic writing, vocabulary and many other things on my English course in Bellerbys and the rest of my mates would agree very much with me.

As for studying Law, I advise you viewers to compile a list of those you want to sue and keep for me because when I come out a just and competent Lawyer, I would deal with each of them one by one!  Foundation Law has really given me an insight of what studying Law would be like in the university and what and what is required for world of Law.  Politics is a subject that would never be forgotten in my life, it is a very interesting subject with action and predictions.

In conclusion, it has been worthwhile doing Foundation at Bellerbys College Oxford!  Stay tuned for my goodbye message to present and future viewers.

The May Ball and The Award Ceremony...again!

Posted by Ksenia

The last few day of May always seemed very odd to me.  There is no homework, no tests, nobody cares about reports but still everyone studies much harder then during the rest of the year.  People often miss classes but not because they were on a great party last night but because they prefer to follow their own revision program in the library.  Library, revision, past papers - those are the key words for the end of the spring term.  Really, if nobody forces people to work but they still do - there must be some very important exams coming up!  Why don't we always have this enthusiasm for learning?  It would make our lives much easier ...  But we are not looking for easy solutions anyway!

Even though everyone is so busy the fact that May Ball is coming soon just could not be ignored.  The ball is always associated with the end of the year - and this time it also reminds me that's my last year at Bellerbys College.  But there was no time for sad thoughts - on the 22nd of May we all get our dresses out (which we discussed so many times before) and went to college anticipating something very special (surely between those two were hours and hours of preparation for most of the girls!).

DSCN7652 DSCN7673 DSCN7715

This year's theme (every time it is different) was Venetian masquerade - so we all have to bring our masks.  Here the public opinion separated exactly in two - some absolutely loved the idea but others imagined how silly we all would look like on the pictures (which are always made in huge quantities on the ball and this year is not an exception!).  I and most of my friends were in the second group so we prefer to carry our masks around, however you may see that we decided to take several pictures with them to have a laugh in future.

Even though I did not particularly appreciate the idea of the masquerade I really liked how Bellerbys was decorated - obviously I rather prefer to see a mask on the wall then on my face!  There was so much to do during this few hours so I was constantly running around the college - that's just some of the top priorities - see the performances by our most talented students (singing and dancing this year was better then ever), take lots of pictures with all of my friends and members of staff, dance in the exam hall and of course eat some of the traditional chocolate fountain (May ball is just impossible without it!!!)

DSCN7644 X_c4b81f97 DSCN7641

When at 11 o'clock the celebration was finished in college we all took our coats and the party continued!  Everyone went to the hotel which is just a few meters from the college - some students rented a conference hall there and invited a DJ from London - the music was great so there was lots more dancing to do!

After midnight people who didn't have enough fun decided to move on - and one of the Brighton's lounge was already waiting for us!  Here we stayed until nobody could move any longer and then we finally took a taxi and got home.  It was a long night but definitely one of those we will never forget!   That was very lucky that we all had an extended weekend in front of us - on the 25th of May it was a bank holiday Monday, so we all had time to sleep, look, exchange and discuss the photos and even study (how good and responsible we are!) before the new week commenced.

On the 27th of May there was another big event (well, at least for A-Level students) - the award ceremony.  Mr Addison and Mr Corcut said some very nice and inspiring words (including that we are the best group that our Vice Principal have seen during his entire career) and wished us lots of luck in the oncoming exams.  Then the best students were awarded prizes.  I was very pleased to see a few of my classmates to get the awards including the principal award, best economics student and special librarian award.  I was also very happy to receive the best science student award even though I think there are many talented students in our department who are probably better in science then I am.

I have barely noticed how the rest of the week went by as books were completely filling my life.  But on Friday afternoon I could not resist the gorgeous weather that once again came to Brighton and went for a walk with my friend who came from London.  She has previously studied A Levels in Bellerbys so it was fascinating for her to see everyone in college and talk to her old teachers.  We had a great time on the seafront talking and drinking frappuchino (have I told you that I love Starbucks? Sure I had - if not I am telling it now!).

Most of the Saturday was also spend on the beach - me and several of my friends took our books and were hoping to study but not we were not too successful as the sun, the sea and a company of your great friends may be very disruptive.  That is why (and also because I got sunburns - as usual!) I decided to stay indoors on Sunday.  Hope you all are having great time and taking most of your summertime - I have to wait for 3 more weeks until the exams are finished and then I will definitely join you!

Bonjour!!!!

Posted by Linh

Hello everyone!  How are you guys?  Hope you still doing well!

Oh!  This month is so great!!!  I mean we have two days which are bank holidays. That means we have 3 days off at the weekend!!!  Goodbye hard studying, hello traveling!!!  (Hey don’t tell that to the teacher ok? I promise I still keep up with school work :D (Crosses fingers)

The 1st bank holiday has passed.  It was on 4th May. We just had class in Friday morning, so I and Saray – one of my classmates who is from Venezuela, decided to book a flight to Paris from Friday afternoon till Monday evening (4th May).

The 1st day:

We bought the plane tickets from EasyJet.  The flight took just about 1 and a half hours but we got to the hotel at about 12 am.  However, the tiring trip did not make us stay in the hotel long; we woke up early next morning (or that morning) to go to the Museum of Louvre.  And that was the first time I feel glad that I was not 18 yet (c’mon, I was so bored of being 17, cannot sign the contract with the mobile company, can not go home late etc).  I did not have to buy the ticket to go inside the museum!

DSC00793 DSC00810 DSC00916 DSC00903

The museum was so large that we spent the whole day there.  I saw the original Mona Lisa picture and the statue of the Venus de Milo.  It was impossible to go near the ‘treasure’ because of security and it was hard to get a good place to take the picture as it was so crowded with tourists and people who wanted to have a view of a 77×53 picture which was at least 2 meters away.  Anyway, that was absolutely a great experience.  Besides, there were many other fascinating masterpiece I had not seen before (and by ’seen’, I mean really see in real life and touchable).  Here are just some in hundreds of photographs we took there.

I was quite exhausted at the end of the day, but we still managed to have a view of Cathedrale Notre-Dame and River Seine. Near there, we met a group of guys skating.  They are so amazing, their movements is no different, or even better than a ballet.  Admiring them too much, we finally took all our courage to ask one for a photograph.  That was an unforgettable memory.

DSC00923 IMG00064-20090502-1844

The 2nd day:

Waking late the next day and still feeling a little bit tired of walking all the previous day, we spent half an hour to decide where to go because there were so many beautiful places.  Eventually, Disneyland was our final choice.

It was quite far from our hotel so it took more than half an hour to get there.  I was too excited about my first visit to the wonderland!  The trip made me feel like I was a baby girl again, nothing to worry, nothing to care, singing out loud in the middle of the park, watching Donald Duck, Peter Pan, Cinderella dancing, joining the dancing lesson with Stitch (it’s a famous character in a serial films in Disney Channel: Lilo and Stitch)…  Everything was great and perfect, except the rollercoaster which made my cry out loud later (it was scary, how come people can laughed and happy like that?).  And it took my friend a while to calm me down after she asked to try it again.

DSC00942 DSC00986 DSC00939

“Ah, it is the last day, there are still thousands places I haven’t visited yet. Where should I go now? Where? Where?”.  I screamed out loud the next morning, feeling worried, frustrated and confused.

“Hey girl, your life is still long.  You can go back to Paris later.  Don’t worry."  "But there are these places I’m not gonna miss today. So pack up and prepare!!!”  My friend smiled and it certainly made me feel better.

So the 1st place on the last day is a restaurant called Hard Rock Café.  It was nicely decorated with many guitars hanging thorough the room.  Later, I knew that they were all the guitars which had been played by famous singers.  My friend told me that Hard Rock Café was very famous and it appeared in many cities and countries around the world, such as Las Vegas in US, Spain, Mexico, and even in London. Hard Rock Café in Las Vegas even had a costume that Madonna wore in a show and then gave it to the restaurant as a gift.

Farewell to Hard Rock Café, we then headed to Louis Vuitton.  The trip was tiring and I had to carry the suitcase all the way because we had to return to the room at the hotel.  However, when I entered the shop, it liked you entered a suit life.  The stuff was expensive but there were still many customers there.

Next stop was the Arc de Triomphe.  The triumphal arch honours those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars.  On the inside and the top of the arc there are all of the names of generals and wars fought.  Underneath is the tomb of the unknown soldier from World War I.

DSC00991 DSC01001 DSC01038 DSC01008

There were four more hours until we had to get to the airport, so we decided to go to a place that if you did not go there in your first time to Paris, it would have meant that you were not in Paris.  And what I am talking about is: EIFFEL TOWER.

Lying under the sunlight in front of Eiffel Tower, I had a strange feeling.  It did not feel like the excitement in Disneyland; it did not like the mystery atmosphere in Louvre Museum. It was, how can I say, may be… peaceful.

The sun was shining, but not burning, the wind was blowing, but not violent, the cloud was floating, but not hasten.  You looked in the sky, and you knew that there was nothing to be regretted, nothing to be hurry because the time was like stopping there; you knew that you did not feeling lost because it felt like belonging, like… home.  (I don’t mean that I forgot my country or anything like that, it just a sudden emotion).

Unfortunately, that dream was too unbelievable to happen, the sky started to be darker, the wind blew stronger and it was time to go.  However, I already drew a picture which is a part of Eiffel Tower, so that I could never forget that precious moment in my life.

Adieu France! I will miss you so much!!!

The School Trip

Posted by Ksenia

For the Sunday 10th of May a trip to Seven Sisters was planned.  Basically it’s a huge country park on the south coast situated between Seaford and Eastbourne.  The sisters are a series of chalk cliffs formed where the South Downs meet the sea.  That was all I knew about our destination when our little group (Mr. Loft, Dr. Andrews and a few A2 chemistry students including myself) was getting on the bus at 2.55 pm.

The idea was given to us by Mr. Loft – my chemistry teacher (who I have already mentioned in my blog so many times so it’s absolutely unnecessary to describe how brilliant he is) – and he was the one to organize everything including the bus journey and even the entertainment (how great it is when at least someone is organized).  We played something which is called Salami Game (do not worry if you never heard of it – I didn’t have a slightest idea about it as well).  Originally it was played in some TV show and involved slicing sausages in five pieces.  Obviously we didn’t have any sausages (which some people regretted a lot) so it was suggested to play with 100 coins (imaginary as well – or do you carry a hundred identical coins in your pockets?).

We were all given a pen and a piece of paper – then everyone should play with a partner and write a number to show how many coins he is willing to bet.  At the same time the partner also writes a number.  The biggest one wins.  The trick is that you only have 100 coins and you have to win 3 rounds (so it doesn’t make sense to bet 95 in the first round – even though you are going to win it, you will have only 5 coins let and your partner will beat you in the next 3 rounds and will win the game.  So you somehow need to guess what the other person is going to bet.  Clever, isn’t it?).

Talking to each other and playing we did not even noticed how an hour went by and we arrived at a small bus stop not far away from Seaford.  So our discovery of the English country side has begun.  Everyone was very enthusiastic to know the names of all the plants we were seeing on our way (we were extremely lucky to have a professional biologist – Dr Andrews – with us) and when we suddenly saw a field with lots of sheep everyone started running around and taking pictures (this joy was quite understandable as one of the boys from Hong Kong has never seen a sheep before).

2009_05103rdSet0094 2009_04110025 2009_05103rdSet0077

It was quite a while before everyone got together again and we continued our walk.  When we finally reached the seaside we took our cameras out again – the landscapes were absolutely fantastic and we did not know at that moment that the most breathtaking views are still waiting for us (or could just guess).

The walk was not the easiest one – we had to almost run down the hills and then climb the next one, again and again – of course they were not that steep but it was quite challenging for people who are used to spend most of the time in their rooms (That was actually one of the reasons Mr. Loft decided to take us out – some of the Bellerbys students are simply not getting enough fresh air as they are studying so hard – poor people I really feel sorry for them – I obviously do not have this problem!).  But as the conversation we were having been so interesting (and quite an odd one sometimes – I guess people who would hear us accidentally would think that we were completely mad.  Imagine what a group of science teachers and students can talk about on Sunday afternoon – well, about everything including ecology, genetics and flame tests!) I have barely experienced any difficulties.

2009_04110024 Do not know why, but really like this one Nice to have everyone together

We were extremely lucky with the weather – it was warm, sunny and slightly windy – ideal conditions for a walk (to be absolutely honest I expected it to be quite the opposite - rainy and freezing - not because I am a pessimist – just trying to look at life and English climate realistically) so I took a warm coat with me – and I was absolutely right at the end!).  Our plan was to watch the sunset at one particular place from where the cliffs looked particularly beautiful – and we even reached the required point on time, taking lots of picture of the stunning landscapes surrounding us on the way.

At first the plan was to go back to Brighton on the 8.30 bus but as anyone was in a hurry and were all a bit tired (we had walked around 10 kilometers by then) so we decided not to rush for it but to have a short break on a particularly picturesque top of a hill and then slowly walk to Seaford.

As the night approached it was turning quite cold (that’s when I was so happy to have my warm coat!) so we were all extremely pleased to get on the bus and used our time to look through all the pictures from the different cameras taken that day (the photos you see here are mainly by Mr. Loft – besides his other talents his a very good photographer). It’s only when I finally got home I really felt how totally exhausted I really was – the only thing I could do is to say hello to my neighbour, set my alarm clock for a bit earlier to collect everything I would need in college on Monday and fell asleep immediately.

And the next morning, even though my legs were refusing to go anywhere I realized that it was the best school trip I have ever been on.

The Lowdown #5 (Easter Break Sneak Peek!)

Posted by Maggie

Exams are looming and terrified pupils roam the school grounds.  One can’t help but feel the tension and stress students are experiencing now, especially if you’re one of the students.

Life tends to go like this: a meal followed by a succession of revision periods then back to square one.  And the hedonist in me is protesting wildly.  So I compensate by gorging large amount of gourmet food while I flip through my Psychology notes.  This is to my disadvantage hence the graduation ball is coming up soon!  The dress I plan to wear on the night is already a bit too fitting on me and with the rate of my compulsive snacking, I’m not sure I’ll be able to wear that dress.

Thank God for the invention of gym.  I am currently obsessed with the yoga hatha classes my gym offers on Sunday afternoons.  I am perfecting my tree pose as we speak.  Anyhow, I cannot wait for the graduation ball!  It is organised by our very own graduation ball committee – a group of highly talented and efficient Bellerbys London students.

I sometime, just for the sake of it, hang out by the stall where the tickets are being sold and where my insane friends and I try to convince people to vote Khoa* for Queen (Khoa is an awesome guy, yes, guy, and so far, there are about 10 votes for him in circulation in the Queen box).  There will be a coronation of a King and Queen (vote for Khoa!) by the end of the night.  The ball itself will be held on a boat and there will be a casino running throughout the night (which is also where I’ll be pretty much all night when I need to take a break from the dance floor).  Of course, we’ll be using “fake” money but hey, it’s still good fun right?

People can get off the boat once we reach Westminster (which is on the other side of the River Thames) but unfortunately, the under 18s are not permitted.  The authorities believe that the fact that the grad ball ends at midnight is already pushing the limits since we normally have to be in our rooms by 11pm.  I’m not complaining though.  Hitherto, I rebelled against any restrictions placed upon me but I seem to understand why we have curfews now.  It is, believe it or not, really for our own good.  Plus, it’s not like we could go anywhere (let’s not get into the whole fake id dealio – they’re so phony).

On the other hand, I’ll enlighten you lot with my trip to Paris and Barcelona over Easter break but only briefly because I could go on for days if you want every single detail.  I hope all of you too had a good time, good rest or whatever endeavours you engaged in over the break.  My mom came to London to visit me and I took her around London like I was a Londoner myself.

It’s funny how time seems to creep up on you and bam! It has already been 8 months since I first set foot on the great British soil.  So after a couple of days spent in London, my mom and I flew to Barcelona where beautiful people and Iberico jamon coexist harmoniously.  My beginner Spanish came in quite handy and it seemed that the locals derived much amusement from my evident effort and struggle in trying to get my point across.  In Barcelona, architecture is its soul.  We witnessed Gaudi’s ingenuity.  Projects like the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo and Park Guell were flooded with waves of tourists ranging from China to Canada.  Gaudi became our friend during our time spent in Barca.

CIMG0061 CIMG0110 CIMG0038 CIMG0161

Here’s one tip from me to you when you travel to Spain in the future: Have tea in the afternoon because the Spaniards expect you to reserve tables after 9pm.  You must be wondering how I’d know this.  Well, when I tried to make a booking(s) at a restaurant(s), I asked for 8pm and all I got was a prolonged “uh” and “earliest is 9.30pm, Miss”.  It’s quite an interesting custom in my opinion.  I actually grew to enjoy having dinners late at night with a glass of cava in hand.

We found an amazing diner on a street called Escudellers.  Its name is Los Caracoles, which literally translates to The Snails.  Naturally, we ordered a plate of steamed snails and ate the snail-shaped bread they had baked.  We also ordered Osso Bucco and Paella on the second night (yes, we were there for two consecutive nights).  The food was great, the atmosphere was pleasant and the waiters were delightful (which consists of mostly middle-aged, bald men).  You have to walk past the kitchen where the chefs greet you passionately before you get seated.  We loved it there!  It felt like home.

We stayed at Le Meridian on Las Ramblas - a famous street (think Oxford street) that has abundant tourists and avid shoppers.  It belongs in the Barri Gothic district where old buildings that date back to many centuries ago remain.  Narrow streets are filled with shops and diners with an occasional cathedral and plaza appearing out of nowhere.

I found out that the Spaniards have a penchant for fresh orange juice.  There were orange juicers everywhere!  The oranges were peeled and squeezed freshly right before your eyes in all the diners that I’ve been in.  Meanwhile, La Boqueria is a market where chefs buy their daily fresh produce from and where housewives gossip about the latest happenings.  Luckily for us, there were bars where fresh seafood were cooked and served promptly.  My mom also appreciated the fact that smoking is allowed.

Afterwards, we went to Picasso’s museum to satisfy our aesthetic cravings.  I fell in love with him after seeing his early works.  Picasso’s early works were intricately beautiful and he could really paint!  He’s not just anybody who took a stroll into the art world and decides to paint weird looking figures and call that art.  He was merely experimenting because one could only go so far with conventional paintings.  He also made sculptures, which were quite cute to be honest!

Now, we shall proceed to Paris.  We took an overnight train where we slept on bunk beds in a super crammed cabin.  I listened to the repeated and consistent rhythms of the grinding between the train and the train tracks.  It accompanied us for the night.  I thought that it was hypnotic and soothing.  My mom disagreed.  She swore she’d never take an overnight train again for the rest of her life.

Once we got off the train (to my mother’s relief), we took a taxi and settled down in our hotel.  I absolutely love the cafes in Paris.  Their bread is… flawless.  The texture, smell and taste of the bread are the best in the world.  Of course, I’ve only been to a few places in the world so I can’t quite confidently admit it’s the best but as far as I’m concerned, it is the best.

We did all the touristy shebang - Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees, Louvre, Musee d’Orsay and whatnot.  My favourite part of the trip was when we went on a cruise ride on the River Seine on a sunny afternoon.  We saw the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Latin Quarters, the old yet stunning bridges (some of them had gargoyles), a couple of Parliamentary buildings and lovers lounging by the steps beside the river.

That is when I truly found Paris a romantic city.  Has anybody seen the film called “Paris, Je T’aime”?  When I got back from the trip, I borrowed it from our school’s library (it boasts many wonderful films!  I am so thankful as I’m a huge movie buff) and saw the film again.  I duly enjoyed it and kept pointing out all the places that I’ve been to that were shown in the film.  There was this one part where the short film was shot in Porte de Choisy which is supposedly the Chinatown of Paris but there were more Vietnamese there than Chinese.  Anyway, I vividly remember this Vietnamese shop and it was in the film and I jumped up jubilantly when I saw it!  It’s quite an exhilarating experience to see the places you’ve been to on the silver screen.

Another favourite area of mine in Paris is Montmatre.  It is a tiny hill located slightly out of the central and it is lined with colourful stores and cobblestone roads.  It is such a photogenic area.  If I were the editor of Vogue, I’d definitely shoot a fashion spread in Montmatre.  Mind you, I applaud Carine Roitfeld’s work (editor in chief of French Vogue).  French Vogue is probably the best Vogue in the world now.  Russian Vogue is not bad either.  My mom and I rode on the funiclement, which means Merry-Go-Round in French and laughed a lot.  Did you know that Merry-Go-Round first appeared in Montmatre?

The next day, we went to Les Deux Magots, which means The Two Old Men in French, located in St. Germain du Pres (another area that I admire).  Apparently, Ernest Hemingway (or was it Oscar Wilde) used to go there.  We ordered blood-orange juice and salmon salad for lunch and chilled out for a while, with our new books in our hands.

Earlier, we went to a cool bookstore called Shakespeare and Co where they sell books in no order whatsoever.  You just venture into the bookstore and pick up any book that you’d like.  The floorboards were creaky and it was super dusty inside but it was such an interesting experience!  Don’t forget to stamp your books with the signature Shakespeare and Co stamp!  Later on, we went to the ultimate fashion store for the chic youths called Colette in Tuileries on Rue St. Honore.  I lost myself in there.  Lastly, one has to go to Laduree before leaving Paris.  It is possibly the best tea parlour in the whole wide world.  Their macaroons are delicious.  I just couldn’t get enough of their rose macaroons!

So you see, the good thing about studying in England is the fact that you could fly off to anywhere in Europe on a whim and quite cheaply too.  Paris in May, Barcelona in September and who knows where else!  Personally, the next few destinations on my list are Amsterdam and Prague.  Gather your friends and all you have to bring is an adventurous spirit!  Okay, maybe not but with a little more planning, you’d be screaming how fortunate you are to be able to live in a great city like London and the fact that it is so accessible to visit other European cities while you’re here.  I’m off now, until the next time, peace.

Two Weeks Full of Sunshine

Posted by Ksenia

Straight after our arrival back to the UK we had to get out our books and go back to study as soon as possible - which was quite a shame taking into the account the gorgeous weather in Brighton (after Moscow it was such a pleasure to go out and just enjoy the sun, flowers and spring smells).

The reason to work hard was simple - all of us had mocks in the first two weeks of the term.  But even though the piles of papers to read and things to learn was still huge on Sunday (my first mock was on the next day) I still could not ignore the Russian Easter.  Personally I am not particularly religious but I just love this celebration.

We got together with several other girls and started to prepare a variation of the traditional Easter meal.  As we did not have almost any of the ingredients we had to use all of our imagination to do it.  The easiest thing to do was to cook the eggs and to color them.  Then we wanted to buy something similar to Kulich which is a kind of Easter bread but we could not find anything so we just bought pancakes and put some sweetened condensed milk on it (“sguschyonka” - essentially cow's milk from which water has been removed and to which sugar has been added, but believe me it tastes much better then it sounds!  You can find it in Europe but the best one is definitely made in Russia - a can of it was brought by one of my friends from home) forming some kind of sweet sandwich and then decorated it with multicolored icing.  You can see the result on one of the pictures!

The next three days seemed just like a very long one - write one mock, come back home, find the notes and read, read and read again until you just cannot keep your eyes open.  But then on Wednesday, after the last test was finished I felt a great relief and was very happy that everything was over already (some poor people still had mocks on Thursday and Friday).  And that was also a very good reason not to do any work for the rest of the week - I was comforting myself with a thought that I really should get some rest before starting studying again.  But the real reason was a bit different - the weather was still fantastic and I much more preferred to spend the time outdoors.

On Saturday there was a big event - Bellerbys Football Cup.  We met up with friends next to the college and then went to the Preston Park all together (mainly because the majority of us could not remember the way even though we all have been there several times).

Some of the teams were already there doing some sort of exercises.  We were the first supporters to arrive but very soon the space around the football field was full of Bellerbys students. The cup started at one and when we left around five o’clock it was still not finished.  11 teams took part in the competition (even though every game only lasted 15 minutes the choice of the winner was a very long process as everybody took this Football Cup very seriously) and in almost all of them we had our friends playing.  So me and other girls who came to watch the Cup had a big job to do – we were shouting, singing, jumping around trying to support our favorite teams as best as we can.

In the breaks between games we were taking lots of useless pictures of ourselves lying on the grass in all the possible positions, eating ice-cream and chatting.  For the whole day it was very sunny and warm but in the afternoon it became a bit chilly due to the cool wind so we decided to leave earlier.  But it was still a pleasure for us to know that a team Ragazzi won and we all went out that evening to celebrate the victory (I think you can guess that we would do this irrespectively of who wins and who loses – all the teams played fantastically and we were very proud of our boys and had a great time – isn’t a good enough reason to celebrate?)

The next day was full of sunshine as well though I wasn’t particularly happy about it when I looked in the mirror first thing in the morning.  It may sound very improbable but I got sun-burns on my skin.  That reminded me once again of how special is the place where I live – in the middle of the spring the sun is strong enough to make your face totally red!  But despite this fact I went to the seafront as soon as possible – I just could not resist the Brighton beach in such a gorgeous day.  And even though my face was even redder when I came back I did not regret any single minute spent in the sunshine – I was filled with energy, enthusiasm and infinite love for Brighton.

A Mistake

Posted by Theresa

A mistake is meant to be little and minor, a few marks should be deducted or substantial little amount should be ducted to correct the minor.  But no, a mistake cost so much and could leave one helpless until another chance is awarded but this is unlikely to happen because of the saying that opportunity comes once in life time.

In the case of exam, If there is a silly mistake and one realizes after the exam and the mistake could damage his or her mark when the result comes out, this could leave the person frustrated and extremely sad especially if the person knew the answer very well.

A mistake can lead to tears, huge one and again especially if you knew it.  However, every disappointment is a blessing in disguise.  It was allowed to happen at an initial stage so that one would be careful in the future not to make the same mistake in an examination that tell where one stands in a higher level like in the university.  This does not mean that one should be careless and ignorant.  One should be careful to avoid such mistake that can damage the success of an individual.

Again that is why there is a word called correction, if there is no mistake there correction would not be necessary.
